Scoutmaster thoughts
Welcome to WordPress.com.
This is an experiment for us in Troop 66. I would like to use this communications vehicle to get information out to and feedback in from my Assistant Scoutmasters in the Troop.
Here is a link to the calendar for your reference
Topics to Cover in this first post:
- Court of Honor
- Junior Leader Training
- Adult assignment to Youth Leaders
- Advanced Scout Skills Coordinator
- Feedback on this Blog
Court of Honor
Friday, 9/21 - We will need adults to participate in the Awards and Recognition session of this event. If you are interested please send an email to Mark Carioscio or Patrick McQuade.
Junior Leader Training (JLT)
Saturday, 9/22 - We need adult leaders to participate in the training session. This is a great opportunity to teach the boys how to be leaders. Marc White is the JLT coordinator. He can use help in making presentations, crowd control, and explaining to the boys their roles and responsibilies. I can’t emphasize enough how important this session is. All Scouts First Class and above are required to attend. Please email Marc if you can attend and help out.
Adult Assignment to Youth Leaders
Last year we assigned adults to help all of the youth leaders. We plan to do that again this year. If you can help in this area, it will be greatly appreciated. This gives you a chance to understand how the troop works and will also give you a great opportunity to make a difference in the success of the youth leadership of the troop. If you have a particular area you are interested in let me know. I will be updated the Youth Leadership Roles and will be assigning adults to them. Stay tuned for more. Here is a link to the assignments from last year.
Advanced Scout Skills Coordinator
In a recent Scoutmaster Conference, I received feedback from a Scout that there weren’t enough younger Scouts to teach given the number of older Scouts. This makes sense given our rank distribution in the troop. An idea I had was to have an adult be the Advanced Scout Skills Coordinator. This role would be to work with one or more of the most Senior Scouts (JASMs) and to come up with advanced skills for the older Scouts who aren’t teaching. An example would be Advanced First Aid during First Aid Month. Let me know your thoughts on this and let me know if you would be interested in helping out.
Feedback on this Blog
So please reply to this blog with your comments. In many ways this is like an email, however, all of the responses can be seen at once as well as the threads of the conversation. Let’s try this out and let me know what you think.

This is interesting, Mike, I like it. BUT
Will this be a continuing blog, or were you going to create new threads each time? How many threads will be active at any time?
Will this be easier than e-mail?
How broad is the net cast here, just the Asm’s or active adult volunteers also?
Is there a cost associated with this or was this freeware/shareware?
Is this going to be an open domain that any web-users could see(our e-mail addresses are displayed) and add to if they find it in a “web search”?

Let me try to answer your questions, Terry.
I think we would continue this thread until we have exhausted it with comments and then start another thread. However, I’m not sure.
I don’t know how many threads will be active, this is an experiment and I/we may determine it isn’t the way we want to communicate.
I don’t know if it will be easier than email. I want to try it out and see what advantages/dis-advantages it has.
The distribution list I’ve used is the asm distribution list. Same group of folks.
No cost, it’s a free service from wordpress.com
It’s open right now, but I think I can restrict it to just people who want to join the wordpress site.

Thanks Mike fo ranswering those questions. Like I said, it looks great. It looks like it would eliminate the “reply all” for everybody to be up to speed. Sounds like a good idea to me. Let’s see what everybody else says.

To follow-up on Terry’s comments…
By default the blog is completely open to the public. But you can make it private - see http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/can-i-password-protect-my-whole-blog/.
However, you would then need to enter in advance the email address of everyone who is allowed to see it - so it becomes yet another administrative item to keep up with… bf

To all Troop Leaders, This a reminder about Out Door leadership training. This is occuring October 5-6-7 At the Ranch in Rochelle Il. The camp is about 1 hour and 15 minutes a way. Straight out 88. As a participate you are shown all the scout skills that a boy scout learns from a Scout to First Class. You camp, you cook, you learn, I highly recommend it. Sign up is at Des Plains Valley council Website. Also if you sign up for the weekly news letter all info on training will be there.
The following week is the troops campout. This will also be at camp Rochelle. We will arrive on friday Night and leave on Sunday. Our duties include but not limited to cooking. We will be cooking and serving Saturday breakfast lunch and dinner plus a snack for the evening.
Sunday morning breakfast. We have been asked to participate in flags. We will need a four scout color gaurd. Someone to help with Saturday morning check in. A skit and a song for the Saturday night camp fire. I am sure anything that may come up we will be able to handle. I have had commitment from 2 ASM and a SM. We could use more. This event is a Webelo parent council event. They are anticipating for over 500 particapates. You must have Youth protection training. You must be a registered scout leader in order to take the training on line.
Last topic is this Saturday. We are having the ASM meeting followed by the JLT. Some of the topics that we hope to cover are Listening to Learn, Great Leaders Are, Whe Me and to go over with each scout about their position. We also want to explain the Troop’s organization chart. I could use help with this event. Please let me know. If there are any questions, I will be at the Friadys court of honor and dinner.
Thanks for your time
Marc
